THE UPSIDE DOWN KING

The tales in this collection surround the two most popular avatars of Lord Vishnu-Rama and Krishna-and their lineage. Countless stories about the two abound, yet most are simply disappearing from the hearts and minds of the present generation.
Bestselling author Sudha Murty takes you on an arresting tour, all the while telling you of the days when demons and gods walked alongside humans, animals could talk and gods granted the most glorious boons to common people.
ZERO TO ONE

BY PETER THIEL

The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. If you are copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them. It’s easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. Every new creation goes from 0 to 1. This book is about how to get there.

It is an extraordinary tale of India’s most celebrated scientist who along with his research found time for his fellow people and worked hard towards their development. In this book, Dr. Kalam sheds light on several personal aspects like the people who he was very close to and their influence on him. He also speaks in detail about the life and the atmosphere at Rameshwaram. He talks about his upbringing and family as well and the various pangs and toils he had to go through.
TURNING POINT

BY A P J ABDUL KALAM

It was like any other day on the Anna University campus in Chennai. I had delivered a lecture 'Vision to Mission' and the session got extended from one hour to two. I had lunch with a group of research students and went back to class. As I was returning to my rooms in the evening the vice-chancellor, Prof. A. Kalanidhi, fell in step with me. Someone had been frantically trying to get in touch with me through the day, he said. Indeed, the phone was ringing when I entered the room. When I answered, a voice at the other end said, 'The prime minister wants to talk with you ...' Some months earlier, I had left my post as principal scientific adviser to the government of India, a Cabinet-level post, to return to teaching. Now, as I spoke to the PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, my life was set for an unexpected change. Turning Points takes up the incredible Kalam story from where Wings of Fire left off.

WINGS OF FIRE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY

If you want to leave your footprints in the sands of time, do not drag your feet." These are one of the most enduring lines that still lay etched in my memory. I have read this book long back, and I don't remember when, but surely the essence remains with me even today. This book is best suited for reading for the teenagers, to dream and to dare. It shows, how a person from the modest background ends up in being the First Citizen of a nation of one billion. It shows how a scientist, devoid of basic tools, helps in culmination of a program which other love to loathe and deride. It shows a man, who lived his life in terms of his principles and nothing else. It shows how a common man, like you and me, can achieve when he can dream. And finally, it teaches how to dream

Man's Search for Meaning

by Victoria. Frankl

Man's  Search for Meaning was first published in 1946. Victor Frankl was a leading psychologist in Vienna when he was arrested for being a Jew during the Nazi regime. He survived holocaust and used his experiences to write this book. He propounded the theory that it is Man's constant search for meaning that allows him to survive even the most brutal, the most degrading situations in his life.

He said there are only two races in the world, the decent and indecent. They will maintain their innate beliefs, no matter which side they are on. The decent ones will try to help the fellow human beings and the indecent ones will be selfish and serve themselves at the cost to the others

BRAVE NEW WORLD
by ALDOUS HUXLEY
Brave New World is a classic - it is a dystonia novel similar in theme to George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. I was recommended to read this book, by my cousin, as I enjoy dystonia novels. Brave New World revolves around the idea of totalitarianism and is set in a futuristic world where a combination of science and pleasure form a rather feudalistic society. This idea of totalitarianism is achieved through test tube babies, and hypnotism, resulting in a pre-ordained caste system consisting of intelligent humans suited to the highest positions and conversely, serf-like beings genetically programmed to carry out menial works. In this world of Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas and the unfortunate Epsilons, exists drug-induced happiness, caused by what is known as soma. Here, "everyone belongs to everyone else" emphasising the system of forced promiscuity, brainwashed into the people from the moment of birth.

Fahrenheit 451
by Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, was born on the 22nd of August 1920, in Waukegan, to a family that was, with no exaggerations, living on books. He was self-educated, which means that all of the knowledge he had was from books and a mass majority of libraries that he visited on a daily basis. He heard about the heartless act of burning books- which to him, was the only reliable source of knowledge in all aspects of life, he felt the need to educate his society about the effects of living in a book-free world can have on us, hence, he wrote Fahrenheit 451-a book that depicts exactly that. Throughout his life, he was influenced by a myriad of factors that lead to him writing such a deep and futuristic novel.

NEVER LET ME GO by KAZUO SHIGUR
Relationships matter more here than Asimov's works, and female characters are prominent. I suggested this to our 12-year-old son primarily because the author's work all across the board is so phenomenal and this is such food for thought. Parents should know that the sexual content here is the main character's mention of "wanting to do it with everybody" and wondering whether something's wrong with her and a second mention by a secondary character saying that she "did it" with other people while dating someone, and that's it. This can certainly be the trigger for a discussion about promiscuity - because we plan to discuss the book - or, it may go completely over my 12-year-old's head. Regardless, he is not allowed to read The Hunger Games, which I found shockingly, despicably violent. In comparison this is a tame and beautifully written book with so much food for thought that the sexual references are worth it.
